What is security?
Video transcript:
Hello, my name is Buzz Coates Security Solutions Specialist for Norbain, and I'm here today
to talk about what is security.
When we think about the three basics of life, food, water, and shelter, shelter really is
very much about security and that means from a long, long time ago, we used to make sure
our shelter or security was on top of hills or in caves, etc, etc.
And over the years that progression, security has moved from physical to the late 20th century,
whereby we start to see electronic security, and today very much we do have a combination
of both physical and electronic security.
So how do we decide what level of physical security and electronic security do we need?
That we base on a number of things such as risk, ie, what are we looking after?
What is the risk of the building?
Is it necessary to have maybe both physical and electronic security?
We also have to look at the drivers.
Why is it that we do need security?
Is it a health and safety issue?
Or is it the fact is that there is a major risk?
Or is it the fact is that an insurance company is telling us that we have to have a security
system.
Typically, in this environment, a security specialist or integrator or consultant or
designer will be asked to maybe attend site and discuss with the end user what the risks
are and the need for security.
And from those discussions with the end user, the designer will then decide exactly what
appropriate physical security or electronic security is required.
An important consideration with these discussions is obviously the budget requirement.
It could well be that you have an affluent residential house, and it may well be in that
situation.
It's a combination of an intruder alarm system.
But it also could well be then that you have an intercom for the gate, and maybe just a couple of cameras that are on the outside of the building.
And if we take an example of a small retail outlet, yeah, it could well be that the intruder
system was put in because the insurance company wanted to make sure that you were covered
for any claims.
But after a couple of claims, maybe they will then say actually, you also need to have a CCTV system as well.
And on top of that, it may well be a standalone access control system, which is used for your
staff just to gain access to the store area and keep that partition between customers
and staff.
And then we move up to a larger system which could be a small logistics or larger logistics
center.
And it could well be that you have a combination of all three CCTV access control and intruder.
But also more than likely, you'll have a perimeter detection system as well, whereby your boundary
or your perimeter is guided by some form of intruder system that could be beams or detectors
or in conjunction with a CCTV system as well.
