iLOQ Battery-Free Padlocks and Cylinders: Features and Use Cases

iLOQ's battery-free, keyless locks are some of our most popular access control products. Here's what the best-selling padlocks, Europrofile cylinders and RIM cylinders do, and where each fits best.

If you manage doors, gates or equipment across more than one site, the expensive part is rarely the lock itself. It is the keys: cutting them, tracking them, chasing the ones that never come back, and rekeying everything when one goes missing. iLOQ removes that problem with a range of battery-free electronic locks, and three product families do most of the heavy lifting: the iLOQ 5 Series padlocks, the Europrofile door cylinders, and the RIM cylinders.

These also happen to be our best-selling iLOQ products at Norbain, so this guide covers what each one does, the features that actually matter on site, and where they fit best.

What makes an iLOQ lock battery-free?

Every lock in this guide runs on the iLOQ 5 Series platform. There is no battery inside the lock and no mains wiring. A standard iLOQ cylinder or padlock harvests the tiny amount of energy it needs the moment a key is inserted, and the mobile versions draw their power straight from the NFC field of a smartphone.

We explained exactly how that works in The Future of Battery-Free Smart Locks. The short version is that it gives you:

  • No batteries to replace, and no flat-battery lockouts
  • No cabling, so installation is quick and the locks can go almost anywhere
  • Digital access rights, so a lost key is cancelled in seconds instead of triggering a rekey
  • A full audit trail of who opened what, and when

You manage the whole estate from the iLOQ software or the iLOQ S50 mobile app.

iLOQ battery-free padlocks (the H50S range)

The padlocks are our standout sellers, and it is easy to see why. A battery-free, keyless padlock is built for exactly the places ordinary electronic locks struggle: outdoors, off-grid, and spread across dozens or hundreds of points.

The H50S family is really one lock system with a padlock for almost every fixing. We stock a spread of shackle sizes, so you can standardise on a single key system and still fit the right padlock to each job:

  • H50S.331.25.HC (8/25mm) and H50S.431.28.HC (11/28mm) for tight clearances on cabinets, hasps and meter boxes
  • H50S.431.50.HC (11/50mm) and H50S.331.60.HC (8/60mm) for gates, fencing and chains
  • H50S.331.110.HC (8/110mm) for the longer shackle reach that wider hasps and posts need

Key features:

  • Battery-free and keyless, with a choice of mobile key or physical key
  • Hardened shackle in 8mm and 11mm diameters across several clearances
  • Built for the outdoors and exposed, dirty environments
  • Programmable access by person, door and time of day
  • A complete audit trail on every padlock

Where they fit:

  • Utilities and energy: substations, meter cabinets, pillar boxes and remote assets
  • Telecoms: street cabinets and unmanned equipment sites
  • Water and wastewater: treatment works, pumping stations and roadside kiosks
  • Transport and infrastructure: depots, signalling cabinets and trackside enclosures
  • Facilities and construction: site gates, storage compounds and plant

iLOQ Europrofile door cylinders (the D50S range)

For doors, the D50S Europrofile cylinder is the workhorse, and our best-selling one is the D50S.311A.SD, a 30/30mm knob cylinder. It is a digital, battery-free replacement for a standard euro-profile (DIN) cylinder, so it drops into most commercial and residential doors with no wiring and no modification to the door itself.

Key features:

  • Standard Europrofile (DIN) format, so it retrofits straight into existing doors
  • Battery-free, with mobile or physical key options
  • Thumbturn knob for easy egress from the inside
  • The same digital management, audit trail and instant key cancellation as the rest of the range

Where they fit: office and communal entrance doors, server and riser rooms, plant rooms, and multi-tenant residential buildings where issuing and cancelling keys is a constant job.

iLOQ RIM cylinders (the X50S range)

For nightlatches and rim locks, the X50S.1A.26.T.R00 rim cylinder brings the same battery-free, digital approach to a common UK door type. It is a tidy retrofit for timber doors and traditional nightlatch setups, so you can upgrade older entrances to managed access without replacing the whole lock case.

Where they fit: front entrances on timber doors, heritage and older commercial buildings, and any site still running mechanical rim nightlatches.

One key system, managed from your phone

The locks are only half the story. The real payoff is management. Because access rights are digital, you can:

  • Issue a mobile key to a contractor for a single afternoon, then let it expire on its own
  • Cancel a lost or stolen key in seconds, with no rekeying and no locksmith call-out
  • Add new locks to the same system as a site grows, without starting again
  • Pull an audit trail to see exactly who accessed which lock and when

For estates with a lot of remote or unmanned sites, that is the difference between a key cabinet full of guesswork and an access system you can actually control.

Which iLOQ lock should you choose?

A quick rule of thumb:

  • Outdoor points, gates, cabinets and remote sites: an H50S battery-free padlock, sized to your shackle
  • Standard internal or external doors: a D50S Europrofile cylinder
  • Nightlatch or rim-locked timber doors: an X50S rim cylinder
